Donald Trump's presidential inauguration is scheduled to begin at noon ET. According to the U.S. Constitution's 20th Amendment, each presidential inauguration should take place Jan. 20, unless that date falls on a Sunday. Then, the president takes the oath of office in private Jan. 20, and the public event is moved to Jan. 21.

Washington, D.C. officials are preparing for the 60th Presidential Inauguration which will be held on Monday, Jan. 20.

The federal holiday was first observed on January 20, 1986. There have been nine presidential inaugurations since then. Two have fallen on MLK Day: Bill Clinton’s second inauguration in 1997 and Barack Obama’s second inauguration in 2013 (which took place on January 21 because the 20th was a Sunday).
