A correction officer has died following an inmate assault at a prison in Ross County, Ohio, according to authorities.

"The loss of a staff person is difficult, but to lose a family member on Christmas Day at the hands of someone in our custody is a tragedy beyond comprehension."

ROSS COUNTY — Authorities have identified the inmate involved in the assault that led to the death of a correction officer at Ross Correctional Institution on Christmas. The inmate was identified as Rashawn Cannon, according to CBS affiliate WBNS.
