Authorities across the United States are investigating after racist text messages – some with references to “slave catchers” and “picking cotton” – have been received by children, college students and working professionals from unrecognized phone numbers in the wake of the presidential election.

People throughout the D.C. area and across the country reported receiving racist spam text messages the day after the election that told them to report to plantations to pick cotton.

"Congratulations! you have been selected to pick cotton at the nearest plantation," reads one version of the messages. "Please be prepared to leave your home November 24, 2024 you will be picked up at 8am sharp in our white van. Also you will sit with Group C Have a nice day. Sincerely, A TRUMP SUPPORTER."

The NAACP on Thursday condemned racist text messages referencing slavery that were sent anonymously to Black Americans this week as a contentious election was coming to an end in the United States.

Officials and universities in several U.S. states condemned racist text messages that were sent to Black residents on Wednesday. The messages, which had almost identical language, told the recipient they had been "selected for cotton picking.
