The Wisconsin state legislature passed a proposal that could enshrine voter ID requirements in the state constitution if Wisconsin voters support it at the ballot box in April. The proposal passed 54 to 45 along party lines in the state Assembly,

Wisconsin’s photo ID requirement for voting would be elevated from a state law to a constitutional amendment under a proposal approved in the Republican-controlled Assembly with no support from Democrats.

Wisconsin voters will decide if there should be a state constitution requirement to produce valid photo identification for future elections.

Voter ID laws are another measure Wisconsin GOP lawmakers look to amend in the constitution, and by Spring of 2025. The law that is more than a decade old is something state assembly members Rob Summerfield, Clint Moses and Duke Tucker call popular and common sense for election security.

The Wisconsin State Assembly passed a proposal Tuesday that could enshrine voter ID requirements in the state constitution if the majority of Wisconsin voters support it. The passage sets it up to go to Wisconsin voters in April — on the same ballot as a consequential election for the state Supreme Court.

Wisconsin's next election is Feb. 18, when voters will narrow down candidates for state superintendent and some local, nonpartisan offices.

A proposal to make Wisconsin's strict Voter ID law a constitutional amendment passed Wisconsin's Republican-controlled Assembly on Tuesday. Voters will see the proposal on the April 1 ballot. If approved,
