Most rock star documentaries tell some variation of the same story: The star rises to unforeseen heights — then falls, usually sped along by drugs and other excesses. Sometimes the star gets back up.

Questlove's documentary about the music of SNL is wildly entertaining and opens with an incredible, showstopping mashup montage you'll have to watch more than once to catch everything that's in it.

For the making of the film, Questlove went ahead and just watched all 900-plus episodes of the show since its debut in 1975. He talked about it with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show yesterday ...
