Schiff defeated former Major League baseball player Steve Garvey in the battle over a seat that Feinstein held for more than 30 years

Garvey, a Republican, and Schiff, a Democrat, vied for the seat long held by the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein, who died in September 2023. Sen. Laphonza Butler, who was appointed to the seat by Gov. Gavin Newsom, decided not to run for it.

Rep. Adam Schiff cruised to victory in the Democratic stronghold of California, defeating Republican challenger Steve Garvey, the Associated Press projected, calling the race just
