The governor quietly directed heads of state agencies to phase out hybrid-work schedules. It's unclear whether there's a hard deadline or if agencies could permit some workers to continue to work remotely.

Gov. Gavin Newsom issued an executive order directing state workers to return to the office four days a week starting July 1. Less than half of the state workforce in California is currently allowed to work remotely three days a week.

The sunset of current hybrid work policies came as a surprise on Monday, but wasn’t entirely unexpected, state workers said.
