A magnitude 5.6 earthquake shook buildings in Taiwan on Thursday morning, as a series of temblors hit the island, causing little damage but possibly portending more seismic activity in the near future.
A magnitude 4.9 earthquake struck Tainan at 3:16 p.m. on Thursday, with a depth of 10.6 km, according to the Central Weather Administration. The epicenter was located 49.1 km east-northeast of Tainan City Hall.
Last April, a magnitude 7.4 quake hit the island’s mountainous eastern coastal county of Hualien, killing at least 13 people, injuring more than 1,000 others, collapsing a hotel and forcing the closure of Toroko national park. A magnitude 5.6 earthquake struck Taiwan early Thursday, followed by a series of aftershocks, according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA). The epicenter of the quake, which occurred at 10.11 a.m. local time, was located in Dapu Township, 40.5 kilometers (25 miles) southeast of Chiayi County Hall at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles).
The quake hit at 12:17 a.m. and was centered 38 kilometers (24 miles) southeast of Chiayi County Hall at a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles), Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration said. The U.S. Geological Survey measured the earthquake at a less powerful magnitude 6.
