Former Ohio State University football coach Jim Tressel was nominated Monday to serve as the state's lieutenant governor following the departure of Jon Husted for the US Senate.

Known on the field for his signature sweater vest, Tressel coached the Ohio State Buckeyes for 10 seasons, bringing the school its first national championship in more than 30 years.

Tressel, who led the Ohio State football program from 2001 to 2010, also coached Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman. The 39-year-old played linebacker for the Buckeyes from 2004 to 2008.
