The leaders of India and Canada on Tuesday held their first bilateral meeting since then-Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused New Delhi in 2023 of involvement in the killing of a Canadian Sikh separatist.
The province’s secessionists are gaining ground, contesting the prime minister’s desire to project national unity.
The 2018 gathering, also held in Canada, was memorable for the spectacular fallout between Mr. Trump and Justin Trudeau, who was then prime minister of Canada. It also produced an iconic photo of the German chancellor at the time, Angela Merkel, leaning over Mr. Trump as they disagreed over whether to let Russia attend the group’s meetings.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is in Canada to attend the G7 Summit that is taking place in the Kananaskis village in Alberta. This is Prime Minister Modi's first visit to Canada since 2015, following an official invitation from Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
An independent Alberta would be a landlocked, oil-exporting nation. It would have to enter into long and painful negotiations with Canada and the U.S. over every aspect of its new status.
