Mumbai: As a preventive measure following an outbreak of a rare neurological disorder in neighbouring Pune district, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) allocated 50 ICU beds with ventilator support in its medical colleges for Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) cases in the city.

As Maharashtra registers over 100 cases of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), the Director General Indian Council of Medical Research Dr Rajiv Bahl said that the cases are under investigation as a team of experts have collected various samples.

“Usually, the immune system fights back the microbe but in some patients, it malfunctions and mistakenly attacks and damages the nervous system, particularly the peripheral nerves linked to limb movements,” says Dr Umesh Vaidya, head of Neonatology, Ankura Hospital.
