The northern lights could once again grace US skies over the coming days. A minor geomagnetic storm is projected to impact Earth on Saturday and Sunday following the effects of a recent coronal mass ejection: plasma and magnetic field that is expelled from the sun.

As Earth completes yet another full orbit around the Sun, an encroaching storm is expected to bathe the planet in a glorious glow of auroral light.

There's going to be yet another chance to see the Northern Lights in Maine tonight. There have been viewing opportunities all week after the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Space Weather Prediction Center issued an alert Sunday night that the aurora borealis may be visible at high latitudes on Dec.

That same activity can lead to aurorae, however, such as the northern and southern lights. This time around that meant that the northern lights could be seen at relatively low latitudes, including as far south as the midwest.

There's a chance solar storms may bring northern lights to several northern U.S states just in time for the new year.
