Police say the death toll in a monthslong standoff between authorities and miners trapped while working illegally underground at an abandoned gold mine in South Africa has risen to at least 87

A group representing informal miners in South Africa says least 100 men who were mining illegally in an abandoned gold mine have died after being trapped deep underground for months while police tried to get them out.

South African police have rescued 26 migrants, believed to be from Ethiopia, who had been held captive in a house in Johannesburg. Fifteen were found naked inside the property while the 11 others - who had injuries - were located nearby.
