Voters in Washington decided to reject three of the four statewide initiatives on Tuesday's ballot except one, according to the Associated Press.

Deep in the 2024 election results, there’s a failed ballot initiative in the state of Washington that may be only a footnote to the major changes under way — but it’s one that could end up having a great impact well beyond one state and even one generation.

If passed, Initiative 2124 would allow employees and self-employed workers to opt out of the WA Cares program at any time.

Early election results indicate that 55% of voters are in favor of Initiative Measure No. 2424, while 45% have voted against it.Initiative Measure No. 2124 would provide that employees and self-employed people must elect to keep coverage under RCW 50B.

The initiative takes aim at recent building code changes that make it more difficult and costly to use natural gas heaters over heat pumps in new construction.

Initiative 2109 would have repealed the state capital gains tax imposed annually on the sale or exchange of long-term Washington capital assets.

Those impacted by the tax include individuals making more than $250,000 in capital gains from the sale or exchange of certain long-term assets. Opponents expressed concerns about the bid to repeal the tax.
