Wisconsin’s photo ID requirement for voting would be elevated from a state law to a constitutional amendment under a proposal approved in the Republican-controlled Assembly with no support from Democrats.

A proposed state constitutional amendment requiring a photo ID to vote in Wisconsin elections is expected to receive final legislative approval as early as Tuesday. That would put the issue before voters on the April election ballot, following the Legislature also passing the proposed amendment during the previous legislative session.

Voter ID laws are another measure Wisconsin GOP lawmakers look to amend in the constitution, and by Spring of 2025. The law that is more than a decade old is something state assembly members Rob Summerfield, Clint Moses and Duke Tucker call popular and common sense for election security.

Wisconsin’s latest proposed constitutional amendment is on the fast track to the voters. The Wisconsin Senate on Wednesday approved the proposal to ask voters whether they want to constitutionally protect the state’s voter ID law.

The Wisconsin State Assembly passed a proposal Tuesday that could enshrine voter ID requirements in the state constitution if the majority of Wisconsin voters support it.
