In a courtroom packed with police, a man was ordered detained Thursday for killing Chicago police Officer Enrique Martinez in a burst of rapid fire during a traffic stop in Chatham on the South Side that also claimed the life of the car’s driver.

Chicago police Officer Enrique Martínez and his partner responded to a block in the South Side’s East Chatham neighborhood on Monday evening for what eventually turned out to be a call with false information.

Police said Darion McMillian cut off his electronic monitoring bracelet after he shot and killed Officer Martinez in East Chatham this week. Shardaa Gray reports.

A 23-year-old man has been charged with first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of a Chicago police officer during a traffic stop on the city’s Southside.

Darion McMillian is accused of shooting Martinez with a handgun equipped with an illegal "switch" that allows it to fire like a machine gun. Martinez, 26, was just shy of three years on the job.
