Authorities across the United States are investigating after racist text messages – some with references to “slave catchers” and “picking cotton” reminiscent of the country’s painful and bigoted past – have been received by children,

Racist text messages received this week primarily by Black students nationwide — including in Missouri — are under investigation by federal authorities. The FBI said in a statement issued Thursday it “is in contact with the Justice Department and other federal authorities on the matter.

People throughout the D.C. area and across the country reported receiving racist spam text messages the day after the election that told them to report to plantations to pick cotton.

Black people from states including Maryland, New Jersey, Florida, Alabama, Michigan, Georgia, Nevada, New York, and South Carolina detail incidents where they received racist messages,

Racist text messages are reportedly being sent to people of color across the country, and within the past few days, some Lowcountry individuals say they have received the texts themselves. State Rep.

"Congratulations! you have been selected to pick cotton at the nearest plantation," reads one version of the messages. "Please be prepared to leave your home November 24, 2024 you will be picked up at 8am sharp in our white van. Also you will sit with Group C Have a nice day. Sincerely, A TRUMP SUPPORTER."

The NAACP on Thursday condemned racist text messages referencing slavery that were sent anonymously to Black Americans this week as a contentious election was coming to an end in the United States.
