California Gov. Gavin Newsom has ordered more than 224,000 state workers to return to the office four days a week starting July 1.

The sunset of current hybrid work policies came as a surprise on Monday, but wasn’t entirely unexpected, state workers said.

Newsom’s executive order requires that state agencies and departments under his authority that offer telework as an option to their employees soon change their policies and require that their employees work a minimum of four in-person days per work week, although case-by-case exceptions will be considered.

It has been five years since the pandemic forced most state agencies into remote work, but some business owners are hopeful the new mandate will be great for the downtown economy.
